New building for fire crew

DANBY Fire Brigade could soon have a new headquarters after North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service submitted plans to demolish the old building.

A new, purpose-built facility would then be put up on the same site in Ainthorpe Lane.

While the new fire house is being built, the brigade plans to move into an agricultural building which would be converted to house the equipment until the new headquarters is ready.

In the application submitted to the North York Moors National Park Authority (NYMNPA), it states: “The new building will provide facilities required for a 21st Century retained fire station, including training and administrative areas, as well as those required for use in emergencies.

“There will also be spaces available for community use, which will provide a valuable resource for local community groups.

“These will be planned so they can be accessed without compromising the security of the rest of the building, meaning they can be used at any time.

“The fire station is designed as a retained station, so there will be no staff permanently based there.

“In the event of a call-out, firefighters will go to the station, change and leave in the fire appliance.”

The building will also accommodate a drill tower that will be used for training purposes.

Danby Parish Council has given the scheme its backing, calling it “much-needed”.

Chairman Pam Reeves said: “I think it is fair to say that we can tell the national park that we support these applications 100% and the sooner the new station is up and running the better.

“They are a valuable service to the area and they need the best facilities to help them continue to look after the area. I’m glad the plans are finally going forward.”

Consultation on the applications is running until 3 December and if no-one objects and the NYMNPA planning officers recommends approval, permission will be granted.
