National success for local businesses

WHEN it comes to national recognition, Whitby businesses are hitting all the top spots this month.

From tea shops to butchers, businesses have been praised in the national papers for their commitment to local produce and great atmosphere.

Coastal cafe Sandside, in Sandsend, was picked out by the Guardian as one of their top five tea shops and cafes by the sea.

The cafe overlooking the beach was praised for its rustic charm with a modern feel, as well as its assortment of home-made pastries and locally-sourced goods.

Neil Hodgson, from Loftus, has run the cafe with his sister Karen for 16 years.

He said: "There has been a cafe in one guise or another on this site for more than a century. We wanted to modernise but keep the rustic feel and look of what it has been all these years, but with a new contemporary twist.

"It was a nice review and we were the only ones representing North Yorkshire. A lot of it is down to the staff who work hard to keep such good standards up."

Support for the business has also generated a growing interest in its local community.

"On our website, since this has happened, visits have gone up by 97% and for Sandsend in general," Mr Hodgson added.

Radford's, on Coach Road in Sleights, was listed in the Top 10 Butchers in The Times' Britain's Best Food Shops.

The family-run butchers has been in Sleights for 26 years and was singled out for its excellent pies and Yorkshire ham.

Andrew Radford, from Sleights, is the fifth generation butcher in his family and believes it's the locally sourced produce that makes the shop top of the pile.

He said: "It's serving it direct from regional farms and product range, hanging meat for 21 days, and it pays off.

"It is a big team effort from the family and members of staff, and it is great to receive credit for it."

The butchers was also visited by TV chef Ainsley Harriott who was filming a new cookery show, sourcing local ingredients.

Also recently featured in the press is the La Rosa campsite, in Egton Bridge and La Rosa hotel, in Whitby, which has been singled out for its unique character and friendly atmosphere.
