Mystery surrounding cancellation of show - HAVE YOUR SAY
MYSTERY surrounds the reason why Sneaton and Hawsker Show will not go ahead next year.
A proposed 40m scheme for a Tesco supermarket and new affordable homes has been earmarked for the land at High Stakesby where the show – the first in the agricultural show calendar – takes place.
But when approached by the Whitby Gazette this week, members of the show committee declined the chance to shed any further light on the situation.
And Whitby Gazette readers can have their say at the bottom of this page.
In a statement to the Whitby Gazette, show secretary Karen Souter said: "Due to circumstances beyond our control, Sneaton and Hawsker Agricultural Show will not be held in July 2010.
"Our sincere apologies for any disappointment this may bring."
Developer S Harrison has teamed up with Tesco to put together plans for the 35,000 square ft eco-store, which could provide up to 300 new jobs, along with a filling station and car facililities.
S Harrison also plans to partner with Broadacres Housing Association to build 90 new affordable homes to buy or rent.
If the scheme goes ahead, it will leave the future of Sneaton and Hawsker Show – which has been running for more than 100 years – in jeopardy.
Originally held in the Sneaton and Hawsker area, the show moved to Whitby a few years ago at the working farm of Sneaton Castle.
Many classes are held including light and heavy horses, show jumping, cattle, sheep, dogs, terriers, ferrets, vintage machinery, produce, handicrafts and children's classes.
Around 70 trophies are awarded and the prize money is among the highest in the area.
All cups and trophies awarded at this summer's show must be returned to Mrs Souter by 1 July.
She can be contacted on 07971 997490.
