Mystery of Yorkshire stone heads solved?

THE WHITBY Gazette may have moved one step closer to solving the mystery of the stone heads that have appeared in Goathland and across Yorkshire.

A website selling carved stone heads by Yorkshire artist Billy Johnson was found by Paul Lewis of Walsall who came across the story on the Whitby Gazette website.

The stone carvings the artist advertises bears a striking resemblance to the ones found in Goathland on September 18.

His website www.paradox-carving.co.uk shows a range of heads that the artists has created.

On the website it says: "Artist Billy Johnson is inspired by the natural environment, his work is about cultivating a timeless essence of personality in each individual stone, rock and fossil matrix. "

"Using minimal hand tools, Billy works with natural materials in a fluid and responsive way, bringing out the beauty of each individual piece.

"Each of the larger head pieces is completed by twilight."

The Whitby Gazette tried to contact my Johnson to see if he could shed some light on the strange goings on, only to be told that he was out of the country for "a few weeks" and was not contactable as he does not use a telephone or a computer.

The stone heads have appeared in Kilburn near Thirsk, Selby and near Rotherham.

The Whitby Gazette reported on today how an image of a man leaving the heads in Braithwell was captured on CCTV.
