Memorial for moors air crash
THE unveiling of a memorial to four airmen who died on the moors in 1941 will take place later today.
It is also the 72nd anniversary of the crash which saw a Hudson Mk 1 come down near the village of Kildale. It was from RAF Leuchars and was returning to base from a night time North Sea patrol when it struck high ground.
The four crew members actually survived the impact but died from exposure and were found two days later.
Malcolm Bisby, chair of Kildale Parish Council has been researching the mysterious crash which wasn’t seen or heard by local residents at the time.
He said: “Many conflicting and inaccurate accounts have arisen over the years but my research has established the definitive facts of this tragic event.
“No memorial currently exists to mark the wartime sacrifice of this crew and it is time this was put right.”
A short service will commence at 11.30am at Warren Gate conducted by Rev Geoffrey Haysmore who himself is ex-RAF and at 12.02pm RAF Leuchers have agreed to do a flypast.
