A PAINTING by the Mayor of Whitby will be taking pride of place in the new cancer suite at James Cook Hospital.

Artist and Whitby Town Mayor Coun John Freeman was commissioned by the Middlesbrough hospital to create a piece for the new building which has been named the Endeavour wing.

He has painted a picture of the Endeavour ship based on material and information he had from when the boat was in Whitby.

It took around two and a half weeks to complete the art work at his studio in Whitby’s market place.

It is now being scanned and framed so the hospital can use the image on postcards and other items to sell to raise much-needed funds.

The James Cook University Hospital Trust has been selling cards with John’s pictures on for some time but he said it was still a surprise to be asked to produce the painting.

He told the Gazette: “It came out of the blue and giving them copyright for the cards was not a problem.

“When they knew the new wing was opening they came back to me and said would I design a painting for the foyer.

“I went up to the wing, we had a look around and decided that the entrance was the perfect place for a big painting.

“It is a bright, cheerful painting because people going into that area need every bit of comfort and cheer they can get.”

The Endeavour suite is a £32m state of the art building with the most up to date radiotherapy treatment in the country.
