Maria wins role in big production
A YOUNG Whitby performer is celebrating after landing a role in her first full length production.
Maria Masterolonardo, a pupil at the Barbara Benson Dance academy in Whitby, was chosen from a cast of nearly 100 hopefuls to take part in the English Youth Ballet production of Sleeping Beauty at York’s Grand Opera House in June.
Maria (11), who has been dancing since she was five years old, recently took part in The UK Alliance of Dance Scholarship event at Blackpool finishing 6th out of hundreds of competitors.
Barbara Benson, who has taught Maria right from the beginning of her career, praised her ability and attitude and said she was proud of her achievement.
“I have been teaching her since she was five and she has lots of potential. “She is a very dedicated young lady and very keen to learn.”
And Mrs Benson, has tipped Maria, who is currently working towards her Level Three qualification, to follow in the footsteps of two of her most high-profile students. Sam Barnett, who starred in a production of Alan Bennett’s The History Boys, and Joanne Froggatt.
“Maria is a pleasure to teach,” added Mrs Benson.
