Man still alive after Whitby viaduct fall
A WHITBY man cheated death after falling from Larpool Viaduct, near Whitby, on Sunday night.
Police were called to the scene at 6.30pm on Sunday night along with ambulance paramedics and members of Whitby and Scarborough coastguard team.
Police say the 34-year-old man was still alive on impact and had sustained serious injuries, including two broken legs and spinal injuries.
Eye witnesses say his fall was broken by trees.
A police spokesman said yesterday: "Officers in Whitby are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding how a 34-year-old man fell from the viaduct at Larpool in Whitby.
"Whatever the circumstances, the man is very lucky to be alive as he has clearly fallen some distance.
"He was unconscious but still breathing at the scene."
The man was taken by RAF rescue 128 Sea King helicopter from Leconfield to Scarborough District Hospital where police said he was in a comfortable condition yesterday morning.
Coastguards prepared a landing site at Caedmon School for the helicopter after getting reports of the man struggling and stuck on a steep bank.
A Coastguard spokeswoman said a winchman was dropped off with a stretcher and the casualty was put on to it and winched into the Sea King.
Yorkshire Ambulance Service confirmed they sent two rapid response vehicles and an ambulance.
