Man jailed for Turk break-in

A HOMELESS man is behind bars after attempting to steal fishing rods, beer and lifejackets from the Grand Turk ship.

The court was told how he was involved with a confrontation on the ship, where crew sleep, during the burglary.

Thomas Edward William Haworth (21) of no fixed abode was jailed for 20 weeks by Scarborough Magistrates' Court for the offence committed on 10 September last year.

Haworth also attempted to stealing a survival suit belonging to the ship which is moored in Endeavour Wharf.

Magistrates stated Haworth had a “bad” criminal record and his offence was considerered so serious because a confrontation had taken place on the ship, where people live on board.

The 21-year-old was also found guilty of failing to surrender bail and failing to comply with the requirements of a community order back in August.
