Make souvenir badge at museum

VISIT Whitby Museum tomorrow and you can make a souvenir badge featuring a favourite exhibit with the help of enameller and jeweller Lynne Glazzard.

Lynne is the current artist in residence at the museum – and she believes it’s an inspiring place.

She said: “Part of my project is to talk to visitors to the museum and try to involve them in looking at the objects.

“There is such a wide variety of exhibits.

“I started by looking at the drawings of snowflakes by Captain William Scoresby that he made in the Arctic – they’re beautiful and all different.

“The museum is a really inspiring place and one of the nice things about it is that it doesn’t tell you what to think about the exhibits but leaves you to make up your own mind.”

Lynne, who lives in Glaisdale, is the artist-in-residence under a scheme organised by Art Connections funded by the Esmee Fairburn Foundation. The aim of her project is to spend time researching and developing ideas to produce a new collection of jewellery later in the year. She will also be organising a number of workshops throughout the year.

Tomorrow at the museum, Lynne will be encouraging visitors to make their own sketch of a favourite exhibit in the museum and then make it into a souvenir badge.

The cost will be 1.50 for each badge, as well as the usual museum admission charge and the event is suitable for children accompanied by adults.

It runs from 11am to 2pm and no booking is necessary.

On Wednesday, from 11am until 3pm, Lynne will run a workshop for adults.

She will also give a short guided talk about the birds in the museum and then those taking part will be able to make their own wire bird brooch.

On Tuesday 14 April from 11am until 3pm, she will run a workshop for adults looking at the Anglo-Saxon exhibition and artefacts in the museum collection and then show them how to make their own Anglo-Saxon inspired copper wire brooch.

Each of the adult workshops will be 8 per person plus the usual museum admission fees and must be booked in advance through the museum on (01947) 602908.
