Lythe pupils tile away the hours!

CHILDREN in Lythe will be able to see their artwork for many years to come now that it's a permanent fixture in the village hall.

The youngsters from the village school worked with artist Rick Havely to paint tiles for the walls of the kitchen in the hall. Their parents and other residents in the village also helped.

Headteacher Andrea Foord said: "The children enjoyed doing it and now they'll be able to see it in the future each time they go into the village hall.

"It was a project done through Rural Arts and they were given special paint to use. The theme was seaside topics and about 80 children aged from three to eleven helped with it."

Pen Cruz, who chairs the school's board of governors and is also spokesperson for the village hall committee, said the kitchen tiles project was part of a 250,000 refurbishment of the village hall.

She said: "The work on the hall is nearly completed and we hope it will be finished by mid-April. We've had it re-roofed and now we're concentrating on the interior.

"It's a lovely old building dating from the 19th Century and it was originally the village school.

"It became the village hall in 1975.

"The tiles were done by the children but we also had a session at Mulgrave Sports Centre in the school holidays when parents and other people in the village helped with the tiles so in all 108 were painted over three sessions.

"Rural Arts supplied the materials and will have the tiles fired for us. When the work on the hall is completed we intend to have a formal opening for everyone in the community."

Funding for the refurbishment of the hall was obtained from a number of sources including the North York Moors National Park Authority.

Local residents also held fund-raising events for the project.
