Lions’ joy at villagers’ donations
Caroline Lilley and Janet Lonsdale donated their Farepak compensation to the Whitby Lion's Bob Stevens w125028a
Two Hinderwell villagers who lost hundreds of pounds when a Christmas hamper firm they were collecting with went bust have handed over their compensation to Whitby Lions.
Six years ago Caroline Lilley and Janet Lonsdale were among more than 150 families across Whitby and district who lost around £50,000 just days before Christmas.
But thanks to the Whitby Gazette and Whitby Lions who started an appeal to help them, all the families were handed almost £40,000 between them in vouchers – the equivalent of 79p in the pound back on everything they had lost, after donations poured in, as well as 17p in the pound from a national Farepak fund.
Now the pair, along with thousands of other people across the country, have received their long-awaited compensation from Farepak’s administrators of 35p for every pound they put in, 30% more than was initially expected.
Former Farepak agent Caroline, who lost her own savings along with 20 other people on her books amounting to £9,000 and Janet, who lost her money too, wanted to help others in need.
Caroline said: “I thought I would give the money back to help someone else.
“The appeal’s help meant such a great deal to me at the time.
“The Lions couldn’t believe it.”
