Lifetime achievement award for author
THE MAN whose books inspired the hit TV drama Heartbeat set in Goathland has been honoured with a lifetime achievement award for his services to Yorkshire.
Peter Walker was presented with the award at the Yorkshire Rural Awards.
Mr Walker, a former inspector with North Yorkshire police, and of Ampleforth, writes under several pen names, including Nicholas Rhea for the Constable series, was chosen for “years of hard work and dedication to his craft”.
Organisers of the awards said: “He has had more than 130 books published, both fiction and non-fiction and is as busy today as when he started writing in his twenties as a young policeman.
“He had 13 manuscripts rejected before he finally had his first book published.
“Most of his books are inspired by and set in the dales and moors of North Yorkshire.”
Mr Walker (72) was presented with his award by former schools inspector and now author and raconteur Gervaise Phinn.
Mr Walker said: “I was most surprised and delighted to receive this wonderful award.
“The Yorkshire Rural Awards are highly significant because they reflect the work, skills and enterprise of people within the county.
“I feel extremely proud and honoured to be included in this year’s presentations.”
The awards were set up to recognise successful small and large businesses, community groups and individuals based in rural Yorkshire.
