Lifeboatmen first on scene at Staithes crash

VOLUNTEER RNLI officers were first on the scene of an horrific crash in Staithes on Thursday morning which left three men seriously injured.

The picture here shows the upturned purple Rover 214i saloon moments after it crashed into a lamp post on the A174 at Staithes.

Lee Jackson and Phil Williams, who are both from Staithes, gave first aid and controlled traffic before emergency services arrived on the scene.

They were both awoken by the crash at around 5.30am and rushed out with life-saving equipment.

Mr Jackson said: "I looked out of the window and saw the car on its side and so grabbed a couple of first aid kits and headed out and my wife rang the emergency services."

All five men in the car got out, and Mr Jackson said they applied dressings to some of their wounds.

RNLI spokesperson Alison Levitt said: "This just demonstrates the attitude of our volunteer crews; they are prepared to use their skills and training in any situation."
