Lifeboat helps after man's fall

STAITHES and Runswick assisted a crew from Redcar after a man fell through some grating at Skinningrove.

The man had to be taken to James Cook University Hospital after falling 10m down a disused pumping shaft, suffering serious injuries to his head, spine and leg

The lifeboat launched at 10.30pm on Friday after Humber Coastguard received reports that a person had fallen through Skinningrove Pier and may be in the water.

Both Redcar lifeboats were launched to assist in the possible search as it was dark and extremely cold.

Once launched it became clear the man had fallen through a grating and down an old pump shaft near the pier.

Fire brigade, police and paramedics treated and took the man to hospital while the lifeboats acted as a communications link between Humber Coastguard and the local, on-scene coastguards.

Dave Cocks of Redcar RNLI said: “We understand the man has sustained nasty injuries as a result of his fall and he was taken by ambulance to James Cook University Hospital. Although the man was not in need of lifeboat assistance the crew were able to provide a valuable communications link between the local rescue units and Humber Coastguard.” Staithes lifeboat returned to station at 11.15pm.
