Joy in Sleights at £36,000 park cash
CHILDREN in Sleights could soon have the play park of their dreams after parents helped secure £36,000 of funding for it.
And now the tiny group of dedicated mums and residents who formed Ingham Play Park Committee have also put in an ambitious 99,000 to The Big Lottery Fund and are crossing their fingers it will be successful.
The decision on whether to award the sum was due to be made yesterday but will not be made public until 12 April.
The play area has just one piece of equipment left – an old rocket put in some years ago when Eskdaleside-cum-Ugglebarnby Parish Council were responsible for maintaining it.
On 7 April between 11am and midday, residents including parents and children are invited along to the community centre in Ingham Close to help shape what it will look like and put forward their ideas for a host of new equipment.
Esk Valley borough councillor Tim Lawn, who also sits on the parish council, has been helping the committee push for improvements to the park, near Sleights Primary School, since it was formed five years ago.
Coun Lawn said: “They have got a rough design of what they want but they want other families to come and get involved and have their input regarding designs.
“It will be nice to have some young children come along with their mums and dads and tell them what they want and residents who have questions as well.
“The committee has done a tremendous amount of work and to keep going for that length of time has been fantastic.
“Without their commitment it would never have got to this stage. It was a real boost to get the 36,000.
“The idea is the park will be owned by the community.”
It is hoped if the next funding bid is successful, which will take the cost of the project to around 140,000, work could start this summer.
The 36,000 for the play park came from the LEADER programme but money has also come from Eskdaleside-cum-Ugglebarnby Council who gave 2,000 and county councillor Herbert Tindall who put in 200 of his own money.
Support has also been given by Scarborough Borough Council who will be responsible for designing and maintaining the play area in a new agreement made last December.
It will be managed by the committee.
Coun Lawn added: “It will be great for the children of the village to have somewhere to call their own.
“It’s a real partnership between the committee, the parish council and the borough council.”
Representatives from the police and Yorkshire Coast Homes, who manage properties nearby occupied by elderly residents, will also be at the community centre on 7 April between 10am and 11am to speak to people with any concerns.
