Jowsey to appear in F1 Spa support races
WHITBY'S Formula Three racer Edwin Jowsey will be racing in a curtain-raiser to this weekend's Formula One Belgian grand prix.
Edwin, of Aislaby, will be driving a recently introduced series, the masters single seat race car, at the famous Spa circuit.
It is an international series, run out of Italy, aiming to get young drivers into F1. These cars are more powerful than the F3 and they are designed with paddle shift gear operations along with other modern technology.
Edwin (22) has never raced this car before and he will have a lot on his plate due to the fact the series has already run eight races and knows he will have a lot to do to be up at the front.
He has a 95% win record from the age of 16 and a 100% record of races this year in the BRSCC F3, including two outright wins in Dijon, France earlier in the year.
This will be a chance for Edwin to put himself in the shop window and impress the big cheeses of international motorsport.
His father Cliff told the Whitby Gazette: "Motorsport is the only sport in the world in which you cannot progress through natural talent alone," he said.
"Football, tennis, rugby, you can get to the top through your ability but in this game it's all about sponsorship.
"By racing in this series it will allow Edwin to show what he can do.
"He raced at Spa a few years ago so he knows the track but they have been tinkering with some of the corners.
"He likes to lead from the front so hopefully he will be able to do that this weekend."
He asked if there are any local motoring fans in Belgium for the grand prix this weekend for them to give Edwin their support.
He will be undertaking a timed practice Saturday morning, and racing Saturday afternoon and Sunday, before the F1 showpiece.
