It's a festive family affair at the dual-choir carol concert

A DEVOTED grandfather and grandson who share many interests have now both recently joined local choirs and sang in the same concert.

Richard Lawton (56) is a member of Staithes Men’s Choir while grandson Tommy Hampson (10) is a member of his school, Seton Primary’s choir.

Both were singing in a carol concert given for the local community at the school.

Headteacher Ros Barningham said: “Local people have supported us all the year and we wanted them to share our Christmas tree and sing some traditional carols with us so we asked them to join us for the concert.

“Both the choirs joined together to sing for us and then the audience also sang some traditional carols with us.

“Some of the carols were sung by candlelight and it was a magical evening. We had a full house and we finished with mulled wine and mince pies.”

Richard’s wife Jackie Roe-Lawton, said: “Richard and Tommy do a lot of things together including sailing and fell walking and they really enjoy each other’s company. Tommy is our only grandson.

“They both joined the choirs this year and now they can sing together. As a family we’re very proud of them.”

Richard is assistant harbour master for Whitby, Scarborough and Filey. His family was originally from West Yorkshire but Jackie is proud of her local roots - her family the Roes and their forebears have lived in Staithes for more than four centuries.

The men’s choir in Staithes needs new members – they give concerts throughout the area and support local charities. They practise each Thursday and anyone interested in joining should call the musical director Brian Butcher on (01947) 841024.
