It's showtime at Hinderwell
THE Hinderwell Horse and Agricultural Society will celebrate its 141st show next month and organisers have a bumper line-up of attractions for visitors.
Hinderwell Show, which takes place this year on Friday, is said to have first started to solve an argument between two local men who couldn't agree who had the best Cleveland Bay foal.
After this inauspicious start, the show has gone from strength to strength, providing family entertainment and fun.
Hinderwell Show is still renowned for its Cleveland Bay classes – a breed of horse favoured by the Queen for pulling her carriages – but also gives people the opportunity to show their skills and animals in a range of 'friendly' competitions.
It also includes classes in heavy horses, pony breeding, ridden ponies, show jumping and gymkhana.
Smaller animals also have the chance to shine with classes for sheep, ferrets and in the dog show.
There are also classes in vintage machinery, farm produce, garden produce, flowers, handicrafts confectionery, preserves and photography.
Children will also get a chance to show off their talents with prizes for the best picture, collage, handwriting and various other arts and crafts.
An added incentive for youngsters this year is that the winner of the best picture will see their picture on next year's schedule or catalogue.
The Downe and Outs jazz band and a fairground organ will provide entertainment as well as a farrier demonstration and other attractions.
The show's nominated charity for this year is the Runswick Bay Rescue Boat who will also be there.
This year the show has benefited greatly from an Awards for All Lottery grant which has enabled organisers to buy essential equipment, some of which will be available for loan to the local community, free IT design courses that resulted in the new design for the front cover of the schedule and training on traffic management. It also funds free craft workshops and a sports day for local children.
The award also enabled the show to purchase two laptop computers that were used in the IT training and will be invaluable on show day.
Show secretary Jude Knight said: "This year we would like to give someone work experience on show day.
"This will mainly be inputting show data onto the computer ready for publishing in the Whitby Gazette."
