Inspector is ready for his first regatta

The circus is in town and it's the week of regatta. I'm looking forward to the weekend and my introduction to regatta. It's been a long time in the planning and we've had a few "get togethers" with the committee since the start of the year, all aimed at ensuring that we all have a great week and weekend. I'm appreciating more and more those who volunteer their time to arrange events such as this for the community. Without them life would be pretty humdrum. Thank heav

I’m also issuing head worn cameras to selected officers to use as an enhancement to the existing CCTV system in town. That way we can directly film what’s happening in front of us and this provides excellent evidence should it be required in court. In addition to this, over the weekend the force Automatic Number Plate Recognition Unit (ANPR) will be in and around town with their strike capability dealing with motoring offences and those who use the roads to perform their criminal activities.

You may also have read that I have been granted a Dispersal Order for the town for the entirety of Regatta Monday. In short this gives us the power to require any group (more than one person) to leave the stipulated area and not to return within a specified time period. If that person were to return they are liable to arrest. As you’ll appreciate this gives us the power to deal with any groups who set out to intimidate or harass others.

To some this may sound like Operation Overkill. To be honest I hope that’s what it is. I’d like nothing better than we enjoy a peaceful, fun weekend just as we do with the Goths and Scooterists. That said I need to be ready for the opposite. We’re a long way from “back up” here at Whitby so it’s important that I have what I may need here and ready to go.

It’s all aimed at protecting those who just want to enjoy themselves without disrupting others. Those who want to disrupt others, or just don’t care, we’ll deal with positively. Next month no doubt we’ll all know how it went.

Crime wise this month statistics are still very much down on last year. We have had a small number of burglaries but someone has been arrested for those. More than that I can’t say yet. As always if anyone has any information or suggestions then please e-mail us at whitbydistrictsnt@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk You can also drop in at our group Whitby Safer Neighbourhood Team – North Yorkshire Police on Facebook. Of course you could also pop into the police station or give us a call on 0845 60 60 247 asking for Whitby Safer Neighbourhood Team.
