Hundreds turn out to pay last respects to Ian Carmichael
HUNDREDS of people turned out to celebrate the remarkable life of Grosmont actor Ian Carmichael at a service of thanksgiving on Wednesday.
The veteran star of stage and screen, who was married to novelist Kate Fenton, died earlier this month aged 89 after suffering blood clots in his lungs.
A private cremation was held in Scarborough during the morning followed by the church service at St John the Evangelist Church in Sleights.
Mrs Fenton said she would like to thank everybody who attended the service and said there had been a real sense of being "surrounded" by friends and neighbours and all who knew Ian, which was a "great comfort."
"What uplifted my heart was the singing in the church," she said. "Ian loved music."
A marquee had been put up at the side of the church to accommodate mourners and many members of the public gathered outside to pay their respects.
Such was the volume of traffic in the village, a police officer had been drafted in to direct vehicles coming in and out of Sleights.
Among those attending the service which featured readings and musical interludes, were Mr Carmichael's many friends, family and showbusiness colleagues.
These included BAFTA award-winning actress Wendy Craig who plays matron in ITV's The Royal in which Mr Carmichael played hospital secretary TJ Middleditch up until his death.
