Huge seas batter the coast - PICTURE SLIDESHOW

THE EASTER Bank Holiday Weekend proved to be a washout with the extreme weather conditions causing chaos in the Whitby area.

One family had a lucky escape after their car became trapped in a ford at Grosmont, sparking a large scale rescue operation.

Huge waves battered the coastline, with the road into Sandsend closed as a safety precaution after the Environment Agency put flood warnings in place.

A number of wave-dodgers ignored the safety cordons and put their lives at risk by standing within a couple of feet of the huge swells. Their actions prompted a furious reaction from Coastguard officials.

You can see a slideshow of Dom Shaw and Alan Wastell's pictures of the waves here.
