Horses killed in stable fire

A FAMILY have been left devastated after their three pet horses died when a stable caught fire last night.

The two Shetland ponies and a horse had already died when fire crews arrived at the farm off Hawsker Lane just 16 minutes after they were called out.

Fire-fighters wore breathing apparatus to tackle the stable blaze just after 8.30pm but it was completely ruined.

John Evans was in tears as he told the Gazette the family had been left devastated by the deaths of the ponies, which were mother and daughter, and the three year-old horse.

They were considered family pets and the ponies had been bought as companions for the horse.

He said: “We had been out just before it got dark and there was nothing. I just can’t understand it. I came outside and it just went up.”

Fire crews from Whitby and the retained Robin Hood’s Bay station tackled the blaze wearing breathing apparatus and using hose reels. A Whitby crew returned to the farm today (Monday) to check there were no more seats of fire.

Although the exact cause is not known a fire spokesperson said it could have been sparks from a nearby brazier.
