Hinderwell streets taken over by scarecrows

SEVENTY-SIX scarecrows have lined the streets of Hinderwell and Port Mulgrave during the past few weeks, but it's all in the name of competition rather than bird-scaring.

The figures were constructed by local residents with the winning entry coming from the Stubbs family who put together a JCB driven by a woman driver who seems to have frightened a local man into throwing himself ostrich-style into the ground.

Second-place went to the Little Britain exhibit that was one of 40 figures at Long Row, Port Mulgrave.

It was designed and built by Kath Todd and Sue Howell, who won last year with Credit Crunch Hospital – a satirical look at the effects of the recession on the public sector.

Chris Nutt-Brown's choir outside the Hinderwell Methodist Church scooped third spot, with a number of entries receiving special commendations.

Lee Barrett from the Hinderwell Chippy sculpted an effigy of controversial big-swinging golfer Tiger Woods while the Webb family's Girl On A Swing was also honoured, alongside Dave and Louise Grayson's Hung Parliament.

Organiser Janet Lonsdale said: "Overall, it was a huge success. We would love to have a few more people interested in joining our organising committee for next year where we will be starting our workshops a bit earlier."

Hinderwell's Gala Week, which included the exhibition, raised nearly 3,000 towards Hinderwell's Sports and Youth Club. The Great North Air Ambulance will also benefit from funds donated from a bucket collection.

Mrs Lonsdale added: "A big thank you to everyone involved for their support."
