Hinderwell housing project to benefit from £600,000 grant

TWELVE new homes could be built in Hinderwell as the result of a £600,000 grant from the Government.

Broadacres Housing Association and Scarborough Borough Council (SBC) will use the 598,360 towards the project at a greenfield site at Moor View in the village.

The plans for the homes are sat to go before the North York Moors National Park's planning committee on 17 March.

Andy Skelton, SBC's head of environmental services, said:"The council has been working hard in recent years to identify suitable sites for sustainable affordable housing.

"This money announced by Government will allow Broadacres Housing Association to provide 12 affordable homes in Hinderwell, on a site identified by the council's Rural Housing Enabler.

"These extra homes are in addition to the 131 affordable homes that are already due to start being built this year, on a variety of sites across the borough."

Housing Minister John Healey announced the 500 million funding on Tuesday to build around 8,000 affordable homes across the country.

Labour's candidate for Whitby Annajoy David said: "This is excellent news for Scarborough and Whitby.

"We know that good quality affordable housing is in short supply and is needed.

"I want to urge the borough council to seize this opportunity and find the appropriate sites where small-scale well-designed housing can be built for families living and working in our two towns.

"The borough needs to appreciate that it's not just a question of fulfilling a remit.

"It's about the borough properly and conscientiously seeking the right sites with good designs and which offer value for money for the tax payers.

"What this borough needs to appreciate is that they are tasked with building homes within existing communities where there is proper infrastructure in place to support them. It's not about building houses for people to live in which are located in alien environments.

"Given the borough's recent decisions on the location of housing I am not sure they fully understand how to develop and enhance community life."
