Hinderwell gala weekend kicks off in village

Hinderwell's Gala week kicks off this Sunday with a fun-filled event running throughout the afternoon at the village's athletics field.

From 1pm, there are children's races, a light-hearted dog show, car-boot sale, vintage tractors, bouncy castles, stalls and the ever-popular topical scarecrows.

Last year's winner was a mock-up of the cast of the BBC's Casualty programme.

Other classics include a road-side traffic cop, which may well have helped slow speeds, a recreation of memorable Aussie insurance ad Sheila's Wheels, plus movie legends Edward Scissorhands and The Addams Family. Downe and Out, a jazz band from Castleton's Downe Arms pub, will be playing throughout the festivities, which run until 4pm.

Also from this Sunday, Hinderwell and District Art Group will be holding an exhibition of paintings by local artists during gala week until Friday at the Old School in Hinderwell. Admission is free.

Monday sees a treasure hunt leave the Badger Hounds at 6pm, with the ever-popular Harry Thompson at the pub providing entertainment with his fairground organ.

The Brown Cow hosts a dominoes drive on Tuesday at around 8pm and the Marske Fishermens' Choir will be performing at the Methodist Chapel on Wednesday, starting at 7pm.

A top-quality concert on Thursday headlines the week at Staithes Athletic Club, a special variety concert begins at 7.30pm, with tickets just 4 each and obtainable from Janet Lonsdale, Lythe Butchers, Staithes Club and the Seadrift Cafe, also in Staithes.

The curtain comes down on Friday with the gala draw at the Badger Hounds, featuring Play Your Cards Right, sadly minus evergreen entertainer Bruce Forsyth.
