Heavy seas lash town

The expected bad weather brought strong winds and wintry showers to Whitby on Friday - and the sea lashed the town at high tide.

Whitby Gazette photographer Dom Shaw was out and about taking these pictures.

Coastguard officials criticised wave-dodgers in Whitbyn who even ignored safety cordons, putting their own and the lives of their rescuers in danger.

And East Coast residents were yesterday battening down the hatches as freezing winds, heavy rain and snow was forecast in the region over the break.

Flood warnings were issued on Friday by the Environment Agency at Scarborough and Sandsend and a flood watch was put in place for the whole of the East Coast north of Filey to Saltburn as well as at Withernsea, Easington and Kilnsea in East Yorkshire. T

he Met Office has forecast a 60 per cent likelihood of heavy snow across the region, with up to 15cm on higher ground, today and tomorrow.

For more details of the Easter weather, see Tuesday's Whitby Gazette and watch for updates on this site.
