Groups prepare for this year's Whitby in Bloom contest

WITH spring ready to be sprung upon us once again thoughts are turning towards Whitby in Bloom.

As the Yorkshire in Bloom regional competition fast approaches once more, volunteers have already been preparing for this year's round of judging.

Whitby in Bloom and the town are due to be judged this month and April and although the group is eagerly awaiting confirmation of the date when the judges will visit, work has already begun on the spring route.

This year Whitby will be challenging Filey, Blooming Bay Thorpe (Robin Hood's Bay and Fylingthorpe), and Hornsea.

Inspired by Whitby's many volunteers and can do attitude, two new groups will also join the bloom's 'It's your Neighbourhood' competition this summer.

The Ruswarp Gardening Society, who are already no strangers to success and scooped 500 in Prima Magazine for their work in the village, are ready to take up the floral gauntlet this year as they enter for the first time.

Young rising star Kadir Jonturk, who last year was awarded a Yorkshire in Bloom young person's award, is this year, leading his first time community entry from Whitehall Landing into the Neighbourhood category.

Susan Davies, chairman of Whitby in Bloom said: "The passion and commitment in all weathers from our many volunteers is what makes Whitby the delightful place it is.

"Since Whitby in Bloom started well over 30 years ago the group has been the inspiration for so many people in the town, so we're delighted that the Garden Society from Ruswarp has been inspired to make such a difference by transforming the village green from a stretch of rough grass into an oasis of calm.

"As for young Kadir, well, it just goes to show that it's never too early to start your gardening career."

Anyone interested in finding out more about how they can support these groups is welcome to contact Susan by calling (01947) 603953.
