Grill the big chiefs in the QT hot seat

WHITBY Gazette readers are invited to grill the people who make the decisions about the town at a Question Time-style debate.

A special event is being held for residents of Whitby and the surrounding rural area to put forward the questions that matter to them to those in power.

Organisers, the Northern Area Forum, wants to hear from people as to who they would like putting in the hot seat and for them to submit questions to key decision-makers of the borough.

Subjects could include the loss of services at Whitby Hospital, transport issues, council tax, gritting procedures, crime or education.

Examples of those who could take part in the debate include Whitby's MP Robert Goodwill, chief executive of Scarborough Borough Council (SBC), Jim Dillon and chief executive of North Yorkshire and York Primary Care Trust, Jayne Brown.

Residents are also being asked to submit questions they would like answering for the debate, which is scheduled to take place on 2 March.

Vice chairman of the Northern Area Forum, Pam Reeves, said: "This event is the public's chance to put those people who make decisions about services in the spotlight.

"Please don't miss out on this great opportunity, come along and get your voice heard.

"The event will be chaired by a local BBC personality and promises to be exciting."

Gemma Ryan, SBC's area forum support officer, added: "During the summer I was out and about on the mobile library and talked to a lot of residents.

"Many were not sure which authority is responsible for what service and some people just want to be able to put their questions to the people who actually make decisions.

"This event is our response to that request.

"We need to hear from residents to make sure the right people are at the event to answer the questions put forward.

"We've got lots of people on stand-by so please get in touch with ideas of who you want there and the questions you want answering."

Keep your eye out for more details about the event. A venue has not yet been decided.

THE Whitby Gazette will feature the people you have chosen to be put in the firing line and will also be hosting an interactive online forum too.

To put forward your questions or to suggest who should sit on the panel fill in the coupon in Friday 5 February's Whitby Gazette and send it to: Alex Fredman, Chief Reporter, Whitby Gazette, 17-18 Bridge Street, Whitby, North Yorkshire, YO22 4BG.
