Go-ahead for new Staithes chippy
A CONTROVERSIAL planning application to change the use of a former Co-op shop in Staithes to a hot food takeaway with a flat above was approved following a visit to the site by the North York Moors National Park Authority committee members.
The application was made by Mr and Mrs M Marsay of Whitby Road, Staithes.
There were a number of objections to the proposal including one from Hinderwell and Staithes Parish Council.
Parish councillors were concerned the shop was near to neighbouring homes that could suffer problems from noise, smells, car parking and potential youth nuisance.
They also pointed out that there is a pizza shop nearby.
County councillor for the area, Jane Kenyon, told the committee she shared the concerns of the residents who objected to the proposal.
A petition in support of the change of use for a hot takeaway, which the applicants said they intended to use as a fish and chip shop, had been signed by 89 people.
The applicants said they would fit modern filtered extraction systems to remove odour from exhaust air and the waiting area was designed to ensure that customers could be accommodated inside the building so avoiding queues on the pavement.
Planning officers said a mixed use of the premises was acceptable and they did not consider that the proposal would have a detrimental impact on the character or amenity of that part of Staithes.
