Gardens open to help raise society cash
GARDEN lovers travelled from far and wide area to Robin Hood's Bay and Fylingthorpe for an annual open gardens event in aid of sufferers of Alzheimer's disease.
Organiser Sue Tucker said: “People came from all over especially for it, even though there was poor weather forecast.
“But we were really lucky as it happened because the weather held out.
“We only have a tiny garden ourselves but we had 28 open all together so there was quite a variety for people to look at.
“Everybody said what a lovely occasion it was and they all thoroughly enjoyed it.
“I think the numbers were a bit down on last year due to the weather forecast but it coincided with Folk Week so other people collected for us including the Otley Morris Dancers.
“And we’re very grateful to all the people who supported us and those who opened their gardens.
“We raised 2,000 last year for the Alzheimer’s Society but we haven’t got all the money in yet for this one.”
Sue’s mum Betty died four years ago at the age of 83 after suffering from the disease for a number of years and Sue’s aim now is to spread as much information as possible about Alzheimer’s.
She said: “There’s a lot of research going on now and it’s very important for people who may be sufferers to get an early diagnosis.
“It’s on the increase as people live longer – one in three of those over 65 will suffer from it.”
