Freight train adds weight to rail work
THERE is still a flurry of activity on the North York Moors Railway following the recent completion of Bridge 30.
Freelance photographer Robert Townsend took this picture of a red locomotive taking scrap from Bridge 30 and shunting it over the road into platform two – the scrap is heading for TJ Thompson of Stockton.
Phil Bustard, spokesman for NYMR, said: "The red locomotive is a class 66 locomotive and the only one of this class to be put into DB Schenker livery.
"DB Schenker is an area rail freight operator and it is with their help that the bridge beams, the crane and other materials have been moved in and out of site by rail. The railway wishes to express its sincere thanks to both DB Schenker and Volker Rail, for their contribution to this major engineering project.
"The use of the Kirow crane from Volker Rail has proved invaluable in lifting out the old bridge and lifting in the 36 tonne new bridge."
Work is on track for completion by 27 March, which is the opening weekend for the railway. This will see the start of the main season, with daily operation commencing then.
The line will be re-opened for business, meaning trains will be operating between Pickering and Whitby.
Mr Townsend added: "This was a rare sight to be seen on the North York Moors Railway and even in the north east.
"Photographers came from miles to photograph the train up the Esk Valley to Teesside, where the crane was left in Tees yard and the scrap bridge taken to Thompson's scrap yard at Stockton.
"The loco had been working on China clay trains in Cornwall so someone at Bolker rail must know people in high places to get them to bring the loco so far north."
