Food award for traditional smoke house
A WHITBY smoke house has won an Eat Local award for the quality produce they have been selling for five generations.
Fortune’s Kippers in Henrietta Street is one of Whitby’s oldest and most traditional businesses and was recognised recently by The Camping and Caravanning Club, which has been encouraging people to shop locally.
The shop will now be featured in the Eat Local guide which highlights places recommended by members of the public for their outstanding produce.
Fortune’s has been a mainstay in the town for as long as anyone can remember and is now run by brothers Derek and Barry Brown, who took over the family business 15 years ago.
Barry said it was a great honour to be listed in the guide.
“We have been presented with a certificate recognising the fact we have been named as an Eat Local business and obviously are now in the guide,” he said.
“We’re obviously very pleased we have been chosen.”
He said they are still using the traditional methods which were used when his family started the business.
“We are still using exactly the same methods that were being used donkeys years ago,” he said.
“A lot of smokers use kilns these days but we are still wood smoking the traditional way and we only sell from the shop.
“We get people coming from all over to buy our kippers, haddock, herring, salmon and bacon – from Canada, Australia, everywhere.
“It’s funny but they all remember us from being on the Two Fat Ladies programme a few years back.
“They come, have their picture taken outside and then come in and buy some kippers.”
He added the business was still going strong, especially as more people are now choosing to look for produce made locally rather than getting everything from supermarkets.
