Folk legends Waterson:Carthy set to boost church with gig
A SPECIAL fund-raising concert with some of the leading lights in the folk world is set to enchant an audience at Robin Hood's Bay's Old St Stephen's Church.
Following on from the success of last August's sellout gig featuring the imitable Martin Carthy and Mike Waterson, the pair will be joined by other members of the Waterson:Carthy clan – Martin's wife Norma Waterson, Mike's daughter Rachel Storr and the late Lal Waterson's daughter, Maria Gilhooley, for a charity concert to swell church funds on 10 July.
They will be supported by singer/songwriter Kath Tait.
There is no electricity at the historic church which dates back to 1822 although there is believed to have been a building on the site for 1,000 years and there is even a spring under the altar.
In the past few days, a flock of locally owned Shetland sheep have arrived at the church to graze in the church's grounds all summer and help keep the grass short.
The sheep have been loaned free of charge and Deb Gillanders said the sheep give them "free strimming and fertiliser."
There is free parking at Hook House Farm or people can access the church via the X56 bus as the church is directly on the bus route.
People are advised not to park outside the church as this can impede local traffic.
Visibility is limited in some pews and concert-goers are urged to get there early to get a good seat.
People are being encouraged to bring a picnic if the weather is nice and enjoy something to eat alfresco in the church grounds before the gig begins at 7pm.
