Flooding hits Whitby town centre
Some parts of Whitby's Baxtergate are in chaos at the moment due to heavy flooding.
Whitby and Lythe crews are at the scene pumping water out of flooded St Ninian's Church and Birthdays greeting card shop.
Scarborough fire crew are also on their way to the scene as it is feared other shops and properties are also at risk of flooding.
Whitby and Lythe fire crew have been at the scene for around an hour and an officer told the Gazette they would expect to be there for at least another hour.
Traffic has come to a standstill with cars, taxis and delivery vehicles backed up in the street where there are two fire engines and long lengths of hose reel stretched along the road being used to pump out the vast quantities of water as the heavry rain continues to fall.
Yorkshire Trading shop staff were also emptying out buckets of rain water and told the Gazette their roof was leaking.
Firefighters said they were expecting more call outs during the day.
