Figures reveal town crime on the drop - have YOUR say here

CRIME committed in Whitby is falling, according to new figures.

There were 390 crimes reported in the town between the beginning of June and the end of September, compared to 405 during the same period last year.

But while the Streonshalh ward has seen a significant reduction in criminal activity, there has been an increase in crimes in both the West Cliff and Mayfield wards.

The figures were unveiled at a recent Community and Police Liaison Group meeting by Acting Inspector Ian Donald, of Whitby police.

From June to the end of September, there were 114 crimes committed in the Streonshalh ward, compared to 166 during the same period in 2006.

Insp Donald said that is a crime reduction of 31%.

"That is an excellent result by our standards," he told the meeting.

"There have been substantial reductions in the number of reported assaults, criminal damages and thefts."

Assaults were down from 44 to 19, criminal damage from 51 to 37 and theft from 34 to 19.

Crimes in West Cliff were up from 178 to 192, an increase of 7%.

Assaults rose from 66 to 77 and burglaries jumped from four to 15.

Insp Donald said: "There has been a disappointing significant increase in the number of reported burglaries in this ward area.

"Several arrests have been made and inquiries are continuing."

There has been a 27% increase in reported crime in the Mayfield ward, rising from 61 incident to 84.

Burglaries were up the most from eight in 2006 to 23 this year. However, assaults were down from 17 to 13.

Insp Donald said the rise in the number of burglaries was down to a persistent offender who has since been dealt with.

He added: "Compared to five or 10 years ago, crime in all wards has reduced significantly.

"Whitby is an extremely safe place to live."
