Family of walkers rescued

A FAMILY of walkers had to be rescued by police and a search and rescue team after getting lost in Wintergill Plantation near Glaisdale.

Three adults and eight children, camping at Hollings Farm in the village, became the centre of the rescue mission after losing their bearings last Thursday evening.

At 7.20pm one of the walkers rang the police for assistance using her mobile phone after the children, aged between five and 12-years-old, started to become distressed.

Officers from Whitby and a North Yorkshire Police search dog were deployed in the search for the lost holidaymakers.

A team of 15 members of Scarborough Search and Rescue were also called in and after a thorough search of the plantation, the group was found safe and well.

Andy Crossley, team leader of the search and rescue team, said: "The group had been walking in the afternoon and got disorientated after getting lost in the plantation.

"They did all the right things, informing the right authorities and staying where they were.

"When people are going out on walking on moors and in the forests they should have a map and compass, and know how to use them.

"Make sure someone knows where your going and when you should be back, and don't rely on a mobile phone."
