Exhibition inspired by coast walk

AN exhibition inspired by the coast to coast walk is being exhibited at Robin Hood's Bay's Swell Gallery and Cafe in Chapel Street.

Lynne Wixon's new canvases are the product of an Arts Council grant awarded to her in 2007 for the production of an exhibition based on experiences of walking the coast to coast trial.

Her 10 large oil paintings reflect her experiences of the journey and the landscape by using the graphic language of the Ordnance Survey maps and minimising the technical information and leaving out roads.

Lynne, who completed the walk last May, said: "I first became aware of the visual beauty of the OS maps when I was planning to do the coast to coast walk in the north of England.

"The walk is 190 miles long and the route takes you from the Irish Sea to the North Sea from St Bee's in Cumbria to Robin Hood's Bay in North Yorkshire.

"I have worked from the maps instinctively drawing on my emotional and physical experiences from the walk.

"The journey became a fusion between the landscape the map and myself."

Coast to Coast – an exhibition of paintings by Lynne Wixon – runs from now until 17 October.
