EXCLUSIVE: Whitby's park and ride scheme shelved - HAVE YOUR SAY
WHITBY'S long-anticipated £2.4m, 450-space park and ride scheme has been shelved due to a funding crisis.
Government grants have been cut meaning all of North Yorkshire's Integrated Transport Capital Programme schemes, including the park and ride project on land opposite the Victoria Farm Garden Centre on the A171 Whitby to Guisborough Road, have been put on hold.
North Yorkshire County Council's Executive Members for Business and Environmental Services are due to meet before the end of this month to decide which projects can go ahead, and which will have to be postponed or cancelled.
As a result of the freeze on transport projects, the council has cancelled a special meeting of its Yorkshire Coast and Moors Area Committee, due to be held on 27 July to consider parking proposals in Whitby and Sandsend relating to the Park and Ride scheme.
County councillor John Fort, executive member for Business and Environmental Services, said: "North Yorkshire has taken a big hit in the area of transport. We have had something in the region of a 7 million cut in terms of our improvement schemes.
"This clearly means that we have to look very carefully at the entire programme, and make hard choices about what remains and what has to go."
