Ex-Whitby MP misses out in bid for Carlisle seat
FORMER Whitby MP Lawrie Quinn has missed out in his bid to be the next Labour Party candidate for Carlisle.
Mr Quinn, who represented the Whitby area from 1997 to 2005, was one of 10 candidates to go forward to be chosen by party members.
The 52-year-old was born in Carlisle and supports the local football team, Carlisle United.
But his name was absent when a shortlist of five candidates was drawn up following a meeting last week.
The candidate who will fight the Carlisle seat at the next general election will be selected from that shortlist on 21 November.
Carlisle's current MP, Eric Martlew, announced earlier this year that he would stand down at the next election. He had a majority of 5,695 at the last election but boundary changes have made the seat more marginal.
Mr Quinn lost his Whitby and Scarborough seat to Conservative Robert Goodwill at the last election in 2005, polling 18,003 votes to Mr Goodwill's 19,248.
