A heifer that escaped from Ruswarp Auction Mart has been shot dead by police marksmen.
The animal made its bid for freedom at around 2.30pm on Monday.
Armed officers were dispatched, and given police concerns regarding the risk that the cow could have posed to the public and of it entering a residential area, it was shot dead at 5.55pm.
A police spokesperson said: “The cow was out of control and posed a danger to the public. Dispatching it was the last resort, all other efforts to restrain the animal were attempted.
“It was a sad outcome for the animal and its owner, but public safety has to be the priority in these situations.”
