Eleven new houses for Glaisdale

A LENGTHY campaign for affordable housing in Glaisdale looks set to become a reality after the North York Moors National Park planning committee backed plans for 11 new houses in the village.

National Park planners have recommended approving the plans for the houses which are to be built on a site north of High Street between Ghyll Brow cul-de-sac and Greenleigh.

Final approval of the plan has been deferred at the request of the applicant, Sanctuary Housing.

The development is designed to link the present local authority housing at Ghyll Brow with the rest of the village.

The development will comprise five houses with two bedrooms and six with three bedrooms.

A pair of two bedroom houses and two of those with three bedrooms will be offered on a shared ownership basis, allowing a maximum of 80% to be bought.

Ownership of the rest will be retained by Sanctuary Housing Association to be offered at a social rent.

Glaisdale parish councillors welcomed the park's planning decision.

A spokesman said: "This development will be the culmination of several years of effort by the parish council on behalf of Glaisdale parish residents and will help to satisfy the need identified in our parish plan for local affordable housing."

In a report to the national park planning committee by planning officers it was pointed out the new housing will help to support the village's primary school, Robinson Institute, post office, general store and local butcher's.

A parish housing needs survey carried out last year revealed there was a need for 26 new houses in the village over the next five years which should include a two-bedroom flat and eight bungalows.

The houses will be offered first to people in the Glaisdale parish and then, if any are still available, to people in adjoining parishes.

In keeping with green policies, it is intended to install a heat recovery system that would include wood burning stoves in each property.

The village has a railway station on the Whitby to Middlesbrough line and also has a bus service.
