Egton woman takes on mountain trek for charity funds

A WHITBY woman is planning to trek through the Transylvanian Alps to raise funds for charity.

Nicola Everitt (34) is originally from Birmingham but now lives in Barton's Row, Egton.

She works as an adult care co-ordinator and is grateful to the local group of the Encephalitis Society based at Malton, which she feels is a fantastic resource.

"I was thankfully lucky to survive encephalitis in 1993, a year before the Encephalitis Society was formed. It was then 11 years before I found the society in 2004 and have found the support and information they provide invaluable to my recovery.

"I now want to give something back to them and am aiming to raise as much money as I can to ensure that everyone who has Encephalitis has the support I have received long into the future. I now need to start training so please give me as much encouragement as you can." she said.

She fell ill at college and her GP wrongly diagnosed her first with tonsilitis, then migraine but she became so ill that her father rushed her to hospital.

She fell into a coma and had to spend a month in hospital recouperating.

Nicola has been left with an acquired brain injury which affects her visual memory, a condition called prosopagnosia which means she can't recognise faces and places.

Between 17 and 22 August along with15 others she will complete the challenging trek.

"For those of you who have never heard of Encephalitis it is a neurological illness in which the brain becomes inflamed, often as a result of some sort of virus and it can result in an aquired brain injury with varying long term effects or sometimes can be fatal." said Nicola.

She will do pre-trek training in Snowdonia, Wales and the minimum she needs to raise to take part in the trip is 1,795.

She hopes to top this by raising 2,000 and has so far raised 534 by holding a table top sale at Egton.

On the trek she will walk for six to seven hours per day.

"I'm not a walker but I do play badminton. I fancy the challenge and plan to utilise the 199 steps up to Whitby Abbey as part of my training." she said.

The Encephalitis Society is a UK charity that aims to improve the quality of life of all people affected by encephalitis. It provides information, support and raises awareness about the condition.
