Dowsing for treasure

THERE was a spot of dowsing and metal detecting to unearth buried treasure in Hinderwell Village Hall car park as part of an ongoing local history project.

The Mulgrave Community Research Project recently secured almost 67,000 of funding and the activities coincided with a visit by officials from the Leader group which provided the grant.

Anthea Ellis, from the Jet Coast Development Trust which manages the project, said the visit was one of several across the area to see how the money was being spent.

She added: “We had them metal detecting for old pennies under a mat. They provided the equipment and since the project started we’ve had over 800 people at our events.”

The project began with a search for the site of an Anglo Saxon church in Seton and members have dowsed several possible sites.

Mrs Ellis said that since its humble origins the project had “mushroomed” across seven parishes in the Mulgrave ward.

She said: We went to Whitby Museum for a day to see what resources are there and people can learn oral history techniques.

“We will be doing the project over the next three years and our main aim is to engage as many people as possible at our events so they can learn more about local history.”

Mrs Ellis added that she hoped that various heritage trails and leaflets detailing village histories could be produced as a result of the project.

People who would like to find out more about the project and its activities are advised to email Mrs Ellis on ellis886@btinternet.com or by calling (01947) 840561.
