Donegan gig paves way for town return
WHITBY'S sell-out Lonnie Donegan Band gig, fronted by the skiffle legend's son, Peter Donegan, has paved the way for future specialist live music events.
The band played classic Lonnie Donegan skiffle songs and a few of Peter's own country numbers.
Playing to a full house at The Friendship Rowing Club with people dancing and joining in on the choruses of the better-known songs, the band enjoyed the atmosphere and experience.
Peter that even though relocating to Spain, he will definitely be back to play The Friendship again the next time he is on a UK tour.
Tickets for the event sold out within three days of the event being printed and many disappointed music fans had to be turned away.
Event organiser Michael Wray, of East Coast Books, said: "We could have sold out twice over.
"It was probably the feature on the gig in The Whitby Gazette that generated all the interest.
"The response was incredible and shows that there is live music gap in the area.
"It was so well received we are now putting on a Cajun Music gig in March, starring the legendary North England band The Cajun Aces.
"Anyone interested in quality live music should watch out for details of the gig, on Friday 26 March – it will be at The Friendship as it is such a brilliant venue for this kind of lively dance music."
Friendship Rowing Club president, Michael Brown, a life-long Lonnie Donegan fan, was over the moon when invited on stage to join Pete Donegan and the band for renditions of Pick A Bale Of Cotton and It Takes A Worried Man.
His duet with Pete went down a storm with the crowd.
