Dog is first rescue of new year
THE first rescue of the year for a 20 strong mountain rescue team was to find a dog which suffered serious injuries after falling while out on the North York Moors.
Ruby, the black Labrador was walking with her owners and their two other Labradors from Levisham towards the Hole of Horcum on New Year’s Day.
At a steep ridge at Yewtree Scar, above Newtondale Halt, Ruby got too close to the edge and slipped through the heather.
Her owner went to see what had happened and slipped herself but managed to stop herself falling all the way to the bottom.
Her partner phoned 999 and the Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team were called in.
After an hour of searching they found the couple and dog which “was in obvious distress” after having suffered a dislocated hip, back injuries and internal bleeding.
One of the team members, a qualified vet, gave Ruby a sedative so she could be carried to the awaiting team and transferred to the duty vet at Pickering.
By the evening, after a four hour call-out, Ruby was heavily sedated, on a drip and described as stable.
