Dad steps in to restore school's fishing boat
YOUNGSTERS at Lythe Primary School now have their very own salmon fishing coble – although they are unlikely to catch any fish in it.
The coble was donated to the school several years ago but it had deteriorated so badly that the children were unable to play in it.
Headteacher Andrea Foord said that without repairs, which would be costly, the boat was not safe to use.
Fortunately, their own knight in shining armour was on hand – parent Gary Chadfield, who has two daughters at the school, Anna and Rachel.
Gary, who owns a property restoration business in Whitby, set to work on the boat.
He renewed its flooring, did all the necessary repairs and finished off by painting it.
Further help came from MKM, a local firm of building material suppliers who donated all the materials needed for the restoration.
Mrs Foord said: “Mr Chadfield did a brilliant job and we’re very grateful to him and the people who gave the materials.
“The children love the boat and they use it a lot.
“In drama classes they’ve re-enacted the historic rescue when the Runswick lifeboat had to be dragged over land.”
Mr Chadfield said he had been happy to donate his time for the job especially when MKM had been kind enough to donate the materials.
He said: “I think the boat should probably have been destroyed when it was de-commissioned but the children will be able to enjoy playing on it now.”
The children will also have the task of choosing a name for the boat which at present is without one.
