Crowds flock for Danby show fun

A BRIGHT afternoon welcomed Danby Agricultural Show's 150th anniversary and although the number of people who attended the show was not a record-breaker the organisers were pleased that it was a little higher than usual – generally it attracts around 6,000 people.

As always, the horse classes and especially the horse jumping proved popular events and the display of highly polished, well-kept vintage tractors and machinery also caused much interest.

Dairy produce and horticultural classes brought displays of some magnificent specimens of vegetables and flowers as well as mouth-watering jams, flans and cakes and an assortment of eggs including colourful, pale green duck eggs.

A new attraction this year that was also enjoyed by the crowds was a display of skilful sheepdog work by Elaine Hill and her dogs.

The clever border collies round up geese and ducks instead of sheep.

Danby show is the oldest in the area and probably one of the oldest in the country.

The first one was held in 1848 and has never been cancelled, although it had to be discontinued during the war years and in 2001 due to the foot and mouth outbreak that year.
