‘Critical’ Nikita’s condition improves

A Fryup teenager seriously injured when she was hit by a car has started to show the first signs of recovery.

Nikita Smith, 16, a pupil at Whitby Community College remains in a coma at James Cook Hospital, Middlesbrough after the moped she was riding collided with an Audi TT near Danby last month. She suffered serious inuries to her head, chest and legs and was airlifted to hospital with her condition desrcibed as critical.

Her father, Andy Smith, was however able to reveal some positive news this week regarding Nikita’s condition.

He said: “Nikita responded by squeezing my hand and flickering her eyes, when we asked her to smile she did and wiggled her toes.”

Nikita is well-known locally for her sporting endeavours.

She is currently ranked number nine in the world in ladies motorcycle trials and is also a talented martial artist.
