A WHITBY couple made the headlines this week following a landmark ruling in Parliament which has set the wheels in motion to legalise gay marriage.

Colin Stonehouse and Andrew Waller, who run the Station Inn pub in the town centre, appeared on national news giving their thoughts on the vote which has divided politicians.

They said they weren’t surprised the vote went through in this day and age but were surprised local MP Robert Goodwill didn’t vote in favour.

Colin and Andrew, who have been ‘married’ for six years after entering into a civil partnership, are looking forward to when gay marriage is legalised in 2015 and they can ‘upgrade’ their marital status.

They say it will give them more legal rights in terms of making wills and simple day to day things like filling in forms.

Colin said: “When you tick a box it is Mr, Mrs or Miss or Ms if a woman doesn’t want to give away their marital status.

“But if you say you are in a civil partnership you are giving away your sexuality without meaning to.

“It does have implications legally and we will do the upgrade, they will just send us out a form.”

He added: “People have got common sense to know that that is the way things are going these days. Whitby is very tolerant and we haven’t had any trouble or problems.

“I didn’t think I would be as affected or bothered by the news this week but it is nice to know that everyone is supporting us.”
